How Often Should Solar Panels Be Cleaned? Regional Guide

One of the first questions almost every plant owner asks is this: how often should I clean my panels? There is no single correct answer, because the right interval depends on the conditions of the site itself. Two plants ten kilometres apart in the same province may well need different schedules.

In this guide we go through the factors that set the cleaning frequency one by one, and share a practical method for arriving at a realistic interval for your own site.

Seven factors that set the cleaning interval

1. Dust load of the region

In arid and windy regions the amount of airborne particles is high. On sites close to unpaved roads, construction areas, quarries or ploughed fields, a visible layer forms on the glass within a few weeks. In humid regions with strong vegetation the build-up is much slower.

2. Rainfall pattern

Where rainfall is regular and sufficient, loose dust is partly washed away. But where rain is rare and short, it only wets the dust and bonds it to the surface instead of improving anything. On sites with long dry seasons the interval must definitely be shortened.

3. Panel tilt

The steeper the tilt, the better the self-cleaning. On low-tilt rooftop systems installed close to horizontal, water does not run off quickly and leaves residue behind. These systems need cleaning more often than steep ground-mounted plants in the same climate.

4. Bird density

Bird droppings are the highest-priority type of soiling because they block light completely and become harder to remove as they dry. On sites along migration routes, beside water or surrounded by tall trees, the interval should be shortened regardless of the other factors.

5. Pollen and organic residue

Pollen load rises sharply in spring. Combined with moisture it forms a thin but light-scattering film on the glass. On sites next to woodland or hazelnut, olive and fruit orchards, an extra cleaning at the end of spring is close to mandatory.

6. Industrial and traffic effects

Inside organised industrial zones, on rooftops near heavy traffic and on sites downwind of factory chimneys, oil-bearing soot accumulates. This kind of soiling does not dissolve easily in water and calls for a short interval.

7. Site size and operating model

On large plants the work cannot be finished in a single day, so the schedule is planned string by string. As the scale grows the cost of the manual method rises quickly, and at that point robotic cleaning becomes decisive both in time and in labour.

A practical starting schedule

Instead of quoting fixed numbers, we suggest a starting point that you then adjust by observing your own site:

  • Rainy, low-dust regions: Start with 2 cleanings a year (late spring and autumn).
  • Moderate dust and farmland nearby: Aim for 3 to 4 cleanings a year and add the harvest period to the calendar.
  • Arid, dusty and windy regions: Four or more a year, with a clearly shorter interval during the dry season.
  • Industrial rooftops: A frequent, regular schedule because of soot and oil build-up, plus one detailed inspection a year.
  • Sites with heavy bird activity: Keep a spot-intervention plan in addition to the main schedule.

This schedule is only a starting point. The right interval becomes clear once you have the production data of the first year.

Finding the right interval with data

The soundest method is to look at the data of the site itself. A simple route to follow is:

  • Note the specific yield (kWh/kWp) of the first day after cleaning and treat it as your reference.
  • Compare production on days with similar irradiation against that reference.
  • When the gap exceeds a set threshold (a few percentage points, for instance), it is time to clean.
  • Record the time that passed between two cleanings. After a few cycles the real interval of your site emerges.
  • Note the seasonal difference separately; the summer and winter intervals may not be the same.

What to watch out for in each season

Spring

Pollen and bird activity are at their peak. Because the residue accumulated over winter also has to be removed, the most critical cleaning of the year is carried out at the end of spring on most sites.

Summer

This is the period of highest production, so the monetary value of soiling-related loss is also at its highest. However, because the panel surface gets very hot, cleaning must be done early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Autumn

Leaves, agricultural dust and harvest-related soiling come to the fore. Cleaning before winter prevents residue from bonding to the surface together with moisture.

Winter

Residue left after snow and the mud band along the lower edge should be checked. Water-based cleaning must be avoided on days when there is a risk of freezing.

Frequently asked questions

Does cleaning panels too often cause damage?

Not as long as the right equipment is used. Damage comes from the wrong method, not from frequency. Hard brushes, abrasive chemicals and high pressure are risky however rarely they are used. Cleaning carried out with soft-brush systems and controlled water flow can safely be repeated at short intervals.

Do bird droppings need a separate plan?

Yes. Bird droppings harden onto the glass over time and may not come off with normal brushing. Solutions such as a scraping attachment are used for this type of stain; on our ATA 120 model this attachment is offered as an option.

Should I clean with my own team or buy a service?

If the site needs frequent cleaning and you already have a team, buying a robot is more economical in the long run. If a few cleanings a year are enough, or you do not want to assign a team, a cleaning service is more practical.

How long does cleaning take?

The duration depends on the site size, the array type, the access routes and the equipment used. With robotic cleaning the area covered per hour is markedly higher than with the manual method, which shortens the total time on large sites.
